The Universe Within
Using yarn and light, The Universe Within draws on metaphors of weaving to create visual and emotional translations of the cosmos, inspired by astrophotography, string theory, and meditations on space and time. The impetus for this imagery was the time Wilson spent in radiation treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During each session, she was slid into what looked like a space pod, a strange, cold place where she began to contemplate making work about outer space. As Artisti-in-Residence at the de Young, Wilson created an immersive installation evoking the ever-expanding universe, transforming the gallery into a constellation of stars in various states of formation and explosion. Museum visitors were guided in creating circular supernova weavings, connecting the external universe with our inner selves.
The performance featured original choreography and text by collaborators Rashidi Omari, Malcolm Jefferson, and See Through Soul featuring Mika Lemoine, Sheila Russell, Anisah Abdullah and Korea Venters.
